From Indigenous homelands and Puritan settlement to revolution, immigration, industry, catastrophe, sport, and reinvention, Boston is a city built in layers.

Boston is easy to reduce to symbols: tea in a harbor, a lantern in a steeple, brick sidewalks, Fenway’s wall, college domes, accents, chowder, championships.

But the real city is more interesting than the symbols.

Boston is a place built in layers. Indigenous history lies beneath colonial settlement. Puritan certainty gave way to imperial commerce. Imperial commerce helped produce revolutionary resistance. The language of liberty collided with slavery and abolition. Immigration remade neighborhoods. Fire erased blocks. Engineers filled tidal land, built subways, raised highways, and later buried them.

The city repeatedly argued with itself about who belonged, who governed, what should be preserved, and what should be rebuilt.

That is why Boston’s history matters beyond Boston. The city has often served as an American laboratory—for education, public health, political protest, abolition, immigration, urban infrastructure, technology, medicine, and culture.

Boston Made Stories exists to keep those layers visible. History should not be reduced to dates on plaques. It should restore people to streets, decisions to buildings, conflict to monuments, and consequence to memory.

Thirty-one stories cannot contain Boston. They can do something better: open doors.

Walk the Freedom Trail and ask who is missing from the familiar version. Stand by the harbor and imagine the ships that connected Boston to the world. Visit the North End and remember both migration and catastrophe. Sit inside Fenway and consider how a working place becomes a shrine.

Boston was not made once.

It is still being made.

Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel Project moved a highway underground, reshaped downtown, and became synonymous with the promise and peril of megaprojects.

For decades, Boston’s elevated Central Artery cut through downtown, carrying traffic while creating a physical barrier between neighborhoods and the waterfront.

The solution became one of the most ambitious urban infrastructure projects in American history: move major highway sections underground, build new tunnels and connections, and reclaim surface space.

The project known as the Big Dig was an engineering achievement—and a political cautionary tale. Costs escalated. Delays, management failures, leaks, and safety controversies became part of its public identity.

Yet its physical transformation of Boston is undeniable. Where elevated highway infrastructure once dominated portions of downtown, new public spaces and connections emerged. The city and waterfront relate differently because of it.

The Big Dig asks a classic Boston question: how much disruption is acceptable in order to remake a city for the next generation? Boston has been rebuilding itself for four centuries. The scale changes. The argument does not.

Fenway Park has survived wars, championships, heartbreak, redevelopment pressures, and generations of Boston memory.

Fenway Park opened in 1912, when automobiles were still transforming city streets and Boston looked very different from the metropolis of today.

Its survival is remarkable. Ballparks of its generation largely disappeared or were replaced. Fenway remained, adapting piece by piece while retaining its intimate dimensions and unmistakable quirks.

The park became more than a sports venue. It accumulated memory. Generations measured summers through games, radio calls, scoreboards, heartbreak, and championships. The Green Monster became an icon. Nearby streets evolved around the rhythms of baseball crowds.

Fenway’s story is also about preservation and economics. Old buildings survive not simply because people love them but because generations decide they remain useful, valuable, and meaningful.

To enter Fenway is to experience an unusual overlap of working stadium and historical artifact. Boston did not freeze the park in 1912. It kept using it—and that continuous use is what made it historic.
