Dear Sir or Madam,

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 — Charlie McAvoy waited six games to play his first shift of the season. It took him less than one period to change the shape of one. Back from a playoff-carryover suspension, the Bruins’ top defenseman scored late in the first, logged a game-high workload, and Boston beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 on Tuesday night at SAP Center for its third straight win.

The Bruins are now 5-2-0, and they did it on a night their own coach admitted was far from their cleanest. That is the part worth sitting with. Good teams win the games they play well. Better teams find a way through the ones they don’t.

How the night unfolded

This was a back-and-forth game in which San Jose kept pulling level and Boston kept answering. The sequence, as recorded in the official league summary:

  • 1st, 12:55 — Fraser Minten opened the scoring, set up by Casey Mittelstadt. Bruins 1-0.
  • 1st, 15:29 — Jacob Trouba tied it for the Sharks. 1-1.
  • 1st, 18:43 — McAvoy, on a feed from JJ Peterka, put Boston back in front. 2-1.
  • 2nd, 5:48 — Ivar Stenberg, the No. 2 overall pick in June’s draft, scored his first NHL goal on the power play, assisted by Macklin Celebrini. 2-2.
  • 2nd, 8:42 — Matthew Poitras restored the lead with his second goal of the season. 3-2.
  • 2nd, 0:03 remaining — Pavel Zacha, from Morgan Geekie, beat the buzzer. 4-2.
  • 3rd, 5:04 — Celebrini scored on the power play to pull San Jose within one. 4-3.
  • 3rd, 11:47 — Minten again, this time from Marat Khusnutdinov. 5-3.
  • 3rd, 18:18 — Will Borgen hit the empty net. 6-3.

Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves on 38 shots, absorbing a long stretch of San Jose pressure in the second period. Yaroslav Askarov stopped 20 for the Sharks. Boston’s win also snapped a three-game losing streak against San Jose, a series the Bruins had once owned with 14 straight victories.

McAvoy’s return, by the numbers

McAvoy sat out the first six games under a suspension for slashing Buffalo’s Zach Benson late in Game 6 of last spring’s first-round series loss. The Associated Press noted that he wasted no time making his presence felt, and the box score backs that up. According to WEEI’s postgame breakdown, he finished with a goal, three shots and four hits, and his 24:41 of ice time was the most of anyone in the building.

That last figure matters more than the goal. A team that had been rotating minutes across a younger blue line suddenly had its anchor back, and coach Marco Sturm leaned on him immediately. The early-season lineup questions (who sits when McAvoy returns, how the pairs shake out) do not disappear, but they become much easier problems to have.

Minten keeps forcing the conversation

If McAvoy was the headline, Fraser Minten was the story underneath it. The two-goal night gives him four goals on the season, two more than any other Bruin, per WEEI, and three goals and five points across his last two games. He is not padding numbers in garbage time, either: his first goal opened the scoring and his second restored a two-goal cushion after San Jose had clawed within one.

Poitras, meanwhile, keeps earning his spot at fourth-line center, and Zacha’s buzzer-beater was the kind of momentum swing that wins road games in October.

What we know, and what we don’t

Everything in the scoring summary above comes from the official NHL game record and was confirmed in multiple independent reports, including the AP and NESN. Lineup and ice-time details come from team and beat reporting. Questions about how long the current line combinations last, or how the defense pairs settle with McAvoy back, are still open and are not answered by any official statement so far.

Boston’s Take

Sturm said the quiet part out loud. “It probably wasn’t our best game,” he said afterward, according to NHL.com. He is right, and that is exactly why this one counts. San Jose outshot Boston 38-26 and scored twice on the power play. The Bruins still won by three because they answered every punch within minutes.

Swayman is the floor of this team. At 5-1-0, he is the reason a sloppy night became a comfortable one. If the special-teams penalties keep piling up, he cannot do it alone forever, but right now he is buying the skaters time to sort things out.

The kids are not a sidebar. Minten and Poitras are scoring real goals at real moments. A rebuild-on-the-fly roster needs exactly that: young players who make the veterans’ jobs easier rather than harder.

Next up is Anaheim on Friday as the Bruins continue their longest road stretch of the early season. Win there, and October starts to look like a statement.

Bruins quiz: McAvoy’s return

Talk it over

  • With McAvoy back, which young defenseman should keep his spot, and why?
  • Is Fraser Minten a 20-goal player this season, or is this a hot start?
  • Boston allowed two power-play goals. Is discipline the biggest thing to fix on this road trip?
